The 1st Canadian Division, under the command of a Canadian officer, Lieutenant-General Andrew G.L. McNaughton, arrived in Greenock, Scotland, on 17 December 1939. Because of the surrender of Poland to Germany on 5 October 1939, the 1st Canadian Division remained in Britain to be equipped and trained. The division was still in Britain when the German army invaded France and the Low Countries on 10 May 1940.
