Canada made a contribution to the Allied war effort that was impressive for a nation of 8 million. Over 600,000 men served in the army, 24,000 in the Royal Air Force, and 9,000 in the Royal Canadian Navy. Canadian casualties in the war were 60,000 killed and 173,000 wounded, the majority of which had been incurred on the Western Front. The Royal Canadian Navy had expanded from 2 ships at the beginning of the war to a fleet of 137 naval vessels by 1918.
