Two Edmonton Originals in the 1885 Rebellion

The Edmonton area‚' first experience of the army came during the North-West Rebellion of 1885 when the Alberta Field Force, tasked to put down the rebellion, came through the settlement. Two of the early residents, William Fielders and William West, joined Steele‚' Scouts, the ‚Äúeyes and ears‚Äù of the force, formed by Inspector Sam Steele of the NWMP. In the photo of three Canadians in South Africa during the Boar War, Fielders is in the front.

In 1885, William Fielders was a freighter carrying goods from the Calgary railhead to Edmonton when a fierce April snow storm stranded him in Calgary as Inspector Sam Steele of the NWMP was organizing a force of light horse known as Steele‚' Scouts. They were to be the ‚Äúeyes and ears‚Äù for the Alberta Field Force which was tasked to put down the North-West Rebellion, a rebellion by the M√©tis people under Louis Riel and their aboriginal allies. Fielders joined the force. William West, another freighter, joined the Scouts as they came through Edmonton. Read about their adventures with the Alberta Field Force and their subsequent involvement in Edmonton‚' commercial and social life in our latest newsletter at the link below.

This is the thirty-first in a series of quarterly newsletters originally recognizing 100th anniversary events of the First World War, with emphasis on Edmonton‚' 49th Battalion, and 75th anniversary events of the Second World War, with emphasis on The Edmonton Regiment/The Loyal Edmonton Regiment. These stories came to an end with our 2019-1 and 2020-3 editions respectively. However, there are still many stories to be told about our regiment, past and present, including our newest series of articles on our regimental commanding officers. We will also be expanding our focus on the museum itself with articles related to more current events and with stories about some of the interesting artefacts and archival materials in our collection.

Anyone wishing to be included on our email contact list to received copies of our newsletter should email us at lermusm@telus.net.
