As the 1st Canadian Corps advanced northward along the Adriatic coast of Italy, the Germans prepared strong defensive positions on the Moro River. The Royal Canadian Regiment and the Hastings and Prince Edward Regiment forced their way across the river on 6 December. Farther to the west, The Loyal Edmonton Regiment and Seaforth Highlanders, supported by the Ontario and Calgary Tank regiments, stormed the town of San Leonardo on 9 December. They then continued to push northward. By 11 December, the entire 1st Canadian Corps had crossed the Moro River and was poised for the final assault on the fortified town of Ortona.
