Tall Tales

Legend has it this infamous "War Stories Helmet" was passed around by veterans at mess dinners and reunions whereupon the wearer of the helmet would be required to share a story of dubious credibility. Undoubtedly aided by the influence of vino or similar beverages, the tales flowed of fantastical blunders, of soldiers single-handedly capturing scores of Germans prisoners, clearing entire towns mysteriously absent from maps and blowing up tanks from 200 yards.  True or not the stories were always comical and provided veterans with an opportunity to reflect on the more light-hearted moments of an otherwise traumatic and unpleasant period of their wartime past.

The helmet is now in the LERMM collection.
