Canada had a considerable presence on the seas during the Second World War. In particular, the nation had committed itself to protect the ships that carried North American war materials to Europe. In fulfilling that commitment, the members of the Royal Canadian Navy risked their lives every day they were at sea. They were not alone in confronting possible death in the cold North Atlantic waters. The merchant mariners that carried war supplies to the Allied forces were also at great risk and suffered heavily
