Treaty of Ghent: 24 Dec 1814

The War of 1812 ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent on 24 December 1814. The treaty confirmed the pre-war American-Canadian border, provided for the repatriation of prisoners, and established a mechanism for the peaceful settlement of boundary disputes. The First Nations who had fought alongside the British were not dealt with in the treaty. However, with the British and Canadian agreement not to continue trading south of the Great Lakes, the Shawnee, Potawatomi, Winnebago, and others were left to negotiate individual treaties with the American government.
