In 1979, the Egyptians and Israelis negotiated a peace treaty, which followed the Camp David Accord of September 1978. Under the auspices of the United States, a multinational team of observers arrived in the Sinai Peninsula to monitor any violations of the Camp David Accord. The Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) is composed of 2,700 troops from different nations. Canada did not participate in the MFO until 1986 when its contribution to the force was 140 military personnel.
